Italian Garden Tour 1

Italian garden tour photos from earlier this year.

Being based in Rome for a week we went for a day trip to Tivoli to see Hadrian’s Villa and Villa D’Este. Both these sites are breathtaking in their scale and ambition and rather humbling for a landscape designer in the 21st century. The hydraulic ingenuity restored at Tivoli and inferred from archaeology at Hadrian’s Villa is beyond anything I can imagine being built today.

At Tivoli water behaves in a myriad of ways to create showers, spouts, streams and noises from cannon fire to bird song. The famous ‘Hundred Fountains’ (above left) is rightly considered one of the great achievements in renaissance garden design. What I didn’t realise however is how many other water features (an inadequate phrase for this garden) there are and also the how steep the site is. Through clever use of terracing the garden is essentially one large gravity-powered water feature with path ways and steps linking each part. The overall size of the site is surprisingly small but you could walk for hours with new scenes and vistas opening at every turn. We did.

does your backyard get full sun, or close to it, for veggies? (wish mine did! :) )
rhodies, azalea's, euphorbia, and hydrangea are bushes that should do quite well where you are. (i'm in seattle)
clematis, wisteria, passion flower vines might work well for you if you have trellis's, etc.
decide colors you like, and combinations of colors - then you can do a search on "google" for say "pink flowers" or "blue flowers". some plant and seed sellers have websites where you can search by colors, annuals or perennials, etc

Lowdown on some tools for gardening  — Tribune-Review
It seems that disposable convenience has superseded sturdy construction, making well-made tools hard to come by. However, it is still possible to find quality gardening tools that will last for generations — if you know what to look for.

  • Avatar k How did the Renaissance Art influence Asia and the Middle East?
    Nov 21, 2013 by k | Posted in History

Im trying to connect the European Renaissance art (like perspective and stuff) to Asia and the Middle East but im having tons of trouble finding anything. Please help!

    • You will really not find any significant connection of European Renaissance influencing other cultures of Asia. Middle East and Orient until its colonization considered European culture to be inferior. Anything from art …rdens in Persia, and supported such ideas of public gardens in Europe. Renaissance is unique in many ways; it was oriented toward ancient past and it blended with styles from various cultures during the Age of Discovery.
